Thurles Racecourse is an oval right handed track of one and a quarter miles.There are 6 flights of hurdles and 7 steeplechase fences in each circuit. In flat races low numbers are on the outside, the effect of the draw is zero. Principally a jumping track though a small number of flat races are held. Racing takes place in the winter months generally from late October to the end of March. The racetrack itself has an excellent free draining soil that lends itself ideally to the rigours of winter racing, with an average of 1,500 runners per season and an average annual rainfall of 35 inches the soil needs to be kept to its optimum to handle this on going punishment.
