A distinguished fourball visited The European Club in July of 2002 on their way to the British Open at Muirfield. Tiger Woods, David Duval, Scott McCarron and Mark O’Meara made up the fourball. Mr. Woods recorded a course record 67 on his first visit to the club.
The links of The European Club was designed by Pat Ruddy and is owned and operated by him with the help of his family.
Ruddy is a golf-writer and golf course designer whose work will be found also at such highly regarded venues as Ballyliffin (Glashedy), Druids Glen, Rosapenna, Port Salon, St. Margaret’s, Donegal (Murvagh) and Montreal Island Golf Club.
The European Club, as the name suggests, is designed as and destined to be a major links and a major club. The links features 20-holes (two extra holes are in play most days) of exciting links golf through tumbling dunes with dramatic views of the Irish Sea from no fewer than sixteen of the holes! Some of the holes play along the beach!
Ruddy discovered the property when he surveyed Ireland’s coastline by helicopter in search for a classic golf location. The result is a magnificent addition to the world’s shortsupply of approximately 160 true links (51 of these are in Ireland).
The policy at The European Club is to welcome guests every day except Christmas Day.The small membership of 125 persons allows adequate space for visitors who must, however, take the precaution of requesting playing facilities in advance.
